Job Description

Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions
Functions under the general supervision/direction of a supervising RN/Physician and is responsible for facilitating the provision of patient care which is goal directed.
These tasks may be completed under the direction and discretion of the primary nurse: Monitors cardiac monitor during transport to ancillary departments and at admission and performs ECG per protocol and as directed.
Initiate/maintain CPAP
Administers (and wastes as appropriate)PO/IV/IM/SQ/SL/Rectal/NG/OG/IO/Inhaled/IV piggyback/intranasal/endotracheal/ophthalmic medications including continuous infusion of vasoactive drugs for hemodynamic regulation & narcotics for pain management as well as IV fluids, including NS/LR/D5W/D10W/Potassium.
May administer ACLS and RSI medications during an ACLS/RSI event, under the direct supervision of the primary RN (and wastes as appropriate).

Performs point of care testing, to include:

Blood glucose

ABGs

I-Stat

Urine HCG

RSV

Influenza

Strep screen

Gastroccult

Hemoccult

Performs IV/IO insertion on adult and pediatric patients and may obtain ordered lab tests.
Place NG/OG tubes and foley catheters in adult and pediatric patients, after being trained by Mercy Medical Center and initiate blindly inserted airway devices to include but not limited to OPA, NPA, King LT's, LMA's. Performs intubation under the direct monitoring of the Provider.
Perform eye irrigation including the use of a Morgan Lens.
Assist the primary RN, as the second staff in Cardioversions/Sedations and in verifying medication and infusions with the primary RN, to include:Insulin/Heparin/Nitroglycerin/Cardizem/Vasopressors/Propofol/Midazolam/Fentanyl.
Respond to in-house and outpatient codes with another nurse.
Transport patients with blood products hanging.
Receive critical lab values and follow Critical Results of Tests Policy.
Break the primary RN, however, not to begin new patients.
Assess patient's response to interventions (ex. Pain).

Receive radio ambulance report if Shift Supervisor or another nurse in not available.

Professional Experience- Required vs. Preferred

Previous patient care/paramedic experience preferred.

Education-Required vs. Preferred

Graduate of an accredited Paramedic Specialist Program-required

Conscious Sedation will be required within 90 days of hire and annually thereafter

Licensure, Certification, Registration - Required vs. Preferred

Required: Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association

Required: Currently licensed to practice as an EMT-Paramedic in the state of Iowa

Required: Current certification in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
