Job Description

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing a variety of technical and clerical duties for the hospital unit dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture program under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.In collaboration with the registered pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern will also work with the healthcare team, assist with special projects and provide clinical pharmacy services through consultation, teaching and committee work.

Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions
Maintains a working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, pharmacology, and pharmacotherapy.
Accurately and efficiently fills, labels, and delivers medications.
Processes controlled substance medications and paperwork in a precise manner.
Assists in receiving, un-packaging, sorting, and restocking of pharmaceuticals and supplies into their appropriate locations.
Routinely checks pharmaceutical expiration dates and replaces outdated and unusable medications, including proper disposal of unusable and expired medications. Properly disposes of all materials used in the preparation of compound sterile products in compliance with USP and USP .
Refills automated dispensing machines to prescribed par levels and fills stock outs in a timely manner and assists in maintaining an accurate inventory in the automation.
Packages medications into unit dose from bulk supply and ensures that packages meet quality standards.
Appropriately triages phone calls and takes detailed phone messages. Responsible for intra-departmental communication.
Keeps pharmacy automation areas clean, neat, well-organized, and continuously flowing. Maintains a sterile environment within all ISO 5 environments, documenting cleaning per policy.
Fills emergency kits and carts with medications accurately and in a timely manner.
Carries out basic calculations required for the preparation of compounded medications.
Under the Supervision of a Clinical Pharmacist, collaborates with physicians, nurses and other members of the healthcare team to ensure appropriate medication therapy, documents clinical interventions, and provides clinical pharmacy services through consultation, drug information, teaching, committee work, and/or special projects pertaining to areas of interest and/or clinical expertise.
Maintains a working knowledge of and complies with pharmacy policy and standards of work and the laws, rules, and regulations that govern the distribution of medications.
Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. This includes working in different pharmacy department areas (e.g., HPCC, Inpatient, Employee Pharmacy) as necessary to meet patient care and business needs
Individuals hired within the first three semesters of pharmacy school may be trained in sterile compounding/USP and hazardous compounding/USP . Individuals hired after the third semester will be trained as time and intern availability allow to meet the business needs of the pharmacy department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to operate basic computer applications.
Ability to calculate dilution and dosing problems.
Ability to operate a variety of automation.
Professional Experience Required vs. Preferred
One year of pharmacy technician experience, preferred.
Education-Required vs. Preferred
Completion of at least one semester in a recognized College of Pharmacy preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration - Required vs. Preferred
Registration as an Iowa Pharmacist Intern shall be obtained by August 31st but no later than September 15th.
Driving a Mercy Vehicle is required for this position:

Valid Drivers License required.
Must be at least age 18.
A good driving record is required at hire, and must be maintained.
